Delighted new residents have started moving in to 434 beautiful new homes delivered in an Australian first housing project by the Victorian Government in partnership with Building Communities, led by Tetris.
Tetris Principal Ryan Slocombe joined Victorian Minister for Housing Harriet Shing, Federal Minister for Housing Julie Collins, Housing Australia’s Regional Director Southern States Jane Homewood and Board Member Richard Wynn, Homes Victoria Principal Project Manager Mark Parkinson, Community Housing Limited’s Kate Daddo and Grant McNeil, and Icon’s Dan Crawley, to meet Margaret-Rose (who prefers “M-R”) Stringer, who recently moved in.
M-R was the very first to move into the new apartments, surrounded by landscaping, play areas, rooftop community BBQ spaces and communal vegetable gardens. She said she was thrilled with her new home, her sunny balcony and lovely views of the new gardens.
“I am totally amazed to be in this gorgeous apartment with high quality features and beautiful gardens. Not only is this place fantastic but the staff are so supportive and delightful,” M-R said.
“The location is great with lovely cafes and shops. It’s a short distance to Prahran Central where I can visit the post office and my pharmacist. “
The project is delivering 228 social and 206 market rental apartments, including specialist disability homes, replacing outdated 120 walk-up flats.
In a first of its kind project, the redevelopment is being delivered under the Ground Lease Model where Homes Victoria has leased the land to Building Communities to construct, operate and maintain the site for 40 years before returning the land and homes to public ownership.
Building Communities’ Ground Lease Model sites in Victoria St, Flemington – 359 homes – and New St, Brighton – 291 homes – have also been completed this year, with an additional development underway at Holland Court, Flemington to deliver a further 286 new homes by late 2026.
Comments attributable to Ryan Slocombe, Principal, Tetris:
“Our very first resident, the fabulous M-R, told me how much she really loves her new place, and for me, this really is the best part of delivering social housing. It’s about assembling partnerships to work together to ultimately make an amazing difference to people’s lives.
“Congratulations on a fantastic job to Icon, JCB Architects and our partners Homes Victoria and Housing Australia. Our on-site tenancy manager, Community Housing (Vic) Ltd, is very busy welcoming new residents and planning fantastic community activities.”
